Wikimedia Polska

A conference bringing together academia and the Wikimedia-based open knowledge infrastructure in Central and Eastern Europe

This is the first conference in the Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) region designed from the outset as a shared space for researchers, open science practitioners and data stewards interested in the Wikimedia ecosystem and Wikidata.

9–10 October 2026, Katowice, Poland (spinPLACE, University of Silesia)

  • Address: ul. Bankowa 5, 40-007 Katowice, Poland
  • Additional satellite events: 8 October (afternoon)
  • Format: hybrid (in-person + online, streamed on YouTube)
  • Languages: English, Polish and Ukrainian, with simultaneous interpretation in both directions

Why this conference

Collaborative work on knowledge requires a shared infrastructure
In Central and Eastern Europe, we have strong academic traditions and active communities creating open knowledge. At the same time, collaboration between these communities still has significant potential for development. The conference creates the conditions for meetings and concrete agreements: from sharing best practices and data standards to research and project collaboratio

What does the Wikimedia perspective bring to the world of research

Wikimedia projects are subjects of research, research tools and a platform for the democratisation of knowln.edge.

    • Wikimedia is a community-co-created and maintained infrastructure that enables the distribution of knowledge, while adhering to clear principles of quality, verifiability and licensing.

    • Wikipedia supports the democratisation of knowledge: it facilitates access to information and is created by a broad group of volunteers with diverse backgrounds. It also facilitates access to more specialised content cited in its articles; it is sometimes referred to as the “first-point-of-contact encyclopaedia”.

    • Wikimedia Commons (a free repository of photos, images and multimedia that anyone can copy and use in accordance with free licences) brings together the cultural sector, researchers and audiences. It is not only a valuable resource but also a tool supporting heritage preservation and research processes.

    • Wikidata supports standardised descriptions of objects, people, concepts and the relationships between them, which facilitates the linking of datasets, analysis and the reuse of data.

    • Wikidata also improves the visibility of research findings and heritage within the open knowledge ecosystem, including in the context of tools based on semantic data.
